Tor Stands Tall Against the NSA

The National Security Agency tried to crack the encryption protecting the Tor network — known as a bulletproof vehicle for anonymous communication — but was unable to do so, according to news reports based on revelations provided by former NSA systems administrator Edward Snowden. Undaunted, the agency and its British counterpart, GCHQ, then reportedly used a flaw in older versions of Firefox instead.

2 Years Later, HP’s Botched Palm Acquisition Still Stings

Former Palm CEO and webOS creator Jon Rubinstein is apparently still brooding over Palm’s acquisition by HP. Two years later, he looks back at what HP did with webOS — or rather what it didn’t do — and he is very disappointed, he said in a recent interview. When HP acquired Palm for $1.2 billion in 2010, it did indeed look as though webOS was destined for great things.

Hackers Escalate Reign of Malware Terror on Android

Android has become a mobile malware magnet, according to F-Secure. A whopping 79 percent of all mobile malware targeted the Google OS in 2012, based on a new report from the firm. That was up from 66.7 percent in 2011 and just 11.25 percent in 2010. The fourth quarter of 2012 was particularly bad, it said, with attacks on Android spiking to account for 96 percent of all mobile malware.

Oracle Tries Again to Get Satisfaction in Java Case

Oracle is not letting go of its Java patent infringement beef against Google despite its sound drubbing last spring when U.S. District Court Judge William Alsup ruled that programming APIs were not subject to copyright protection. Last week, Oracle took the case to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
